Healthiest Generation Ever

What does health look like for the future? It's a question in the back of everyone's mind. Everyday we all make efforts to live a healthy life whether through working out, vitamins, diet, etc. What if the health issues we struggle with today were solved for our future generations so they never have to face them. What if we started from the beginning? What if we keyed in on babies health issues before they were even born? That is Johnson&Johnson's mission for the Healthiest Generation Ever.

When Ellie was a baby I would stay up at night wondering what she was dreaming about, what her laugh would sound like, what her favorite color would be, would she ice skate or do gymnastics? Five years later, with a few questions answered, I still find myself up at night thinking about her future. Parenthood is super complex, but we all have one thing in common, we all just want to raise happy and healthy babies. And Johnson & Johnson feels the same way. J&J has committed to continue its efforts providing the most upcoming and innovative research and development for future generations, starting with babies with programs such as Babycenter, Momconnect, UNICEF, and Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait.

From producing safe delivery kits to releasing their first iconic Johnson Baby Lotion in 1944, J&J has been focused on the well-being and health of babies since the 1890’s. Up until now J&J has challenged themselves to be at the forefront of the healthy-baby revolution. Last year they launched the GenH Challenge, a global social venture competition dedicated to finding solutions for some of the world’s toughest health problems.

J&J not only stresses the importance of health and well-being in the early months of life but even before birth. They are focusing on anything from medications to habits, to preparing for emergencies during birth. J&J recently partnered with UNICEF to help train more than 3,000 midwives and medical workers in safe baby delivery techniques in Vietnam.

Here in the U.S. J&J created an initiative; “Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait” which helps decrease Preterm births. Preterm births have long term medical consequences and have risen over the past two decades. The program is aimed at providing resources to increase knowledge about factors that cause preterm birth, offering expectant moms a combination of education and increased medical access.

When I found out I was pregnant, Babycenter was my go to source for what to expect during my pregnancy and how to prepare for my new baby. Today, Babycenter is the world's number one digital parenting resource, with content reaching over 100 million people monthly. Its no surprise that today 7 of every 10 moms in the United States uses Babycenter. It is also available in 9 different languages. J&J launched a new initiative in South Africa called MomConnect, allowing expectant and new moms added ways to learn at each step of the journey from pregnancy to birth and so much more.

In 2014 J&J set up the mobile messaging program to target low income mothers in South Africa, with the help of Babycenter, the world’s number one digital parenting resource and local partners. After signing up at their local clinic, MomConnect works by sending weekly healthcare messages to expecting and new moms that help them take care of their health and that of their baby! Not only do they receive medical information, but also mother bonding tips as well, like baby’s first hiccups or kicks. Another amazing feature is that expecting mothers can text back and safely report problems they are having with their clinics. MomConnect goes beyond just helping with information, but gives the mother a voice.

In addition to medical care, J&J helps mother-child bonding by encouraging the formation of healthy habits in our daily lives. They believe scents and touch play a huge role in the baby’s development as well as strengthen the parent and child relationship.

I agree! I can still remember Ellie’s first bath when we used Johnson’s baby products. They brought me back to my childhood through the power of scent. Bath time was a great way for me as a new mom to incorporate a healthy schedule and bond with Ellie. We still have a similar bath time routine that continues to teach Ellie about having healthy habits and learn the responsibility of caring for herself. Knowing J&J is looking out for our little ones before, during, and throughout their early years of life gives me one less thing to ponder about at night.
